This statement was made by Nadia Hadad, Strategic Engagement Director of the Madani Berkelanjutan Foundation, in a virtual Earth Day Forum discussion themed " Conserving Forests for Climate Change Mitigation " on Wednesday, April 21, 2021.
This virtual Earth Day Forum discussion was held by Katadata which discussed the strategies and efforts of the Ministry of Environment and Forestry (KLHK) together with the Environmental Fund Management Agency (BPDLH) of the Ministry of Finance regarding the social forestry program to support government efforts in mitigating climate change, including the idea of creating Climate Villages.
The success of KKI WARSI in implementing the Social Forestry program in Jambi for carbon storage can be a successful example that is expected to inspire many regions with large areas of natural forest cover to better protect their forests.
On the same occasion, Nadia Hadad also conveyed that the Climate Village Program (Proklim) currently being developed is a real example that protecting forests can not only preserve the environment but also improve the economy. " The Sustainable Madani Foundation strongly supports climate change mitigation activities through Proklim, currently we have supported this activity in Lampo Village, Donggala, Central Sulawesi and also in Nagari Sirukam, Solok Regency, West Sumatra in collaboration with the Warsi Community ," said Nadia.
The discussion, which addressed climate change mitigation efforts, was also attended by Djoko Hendratto, President Director of BPDLH, Ministry of Finance, Director of Environment, Ministry of National Development Planning/Bappenas, Medrilzam, and Director of KKI WARSI, Rudy Syaf.
KKI WARSI Director Rudy Syaf stated that social forestry is a truly effective program for forest conservation. He emphasized that when communities are given the rights and access to manage forests, they are simultaneously better protected. " After obtaining village forest management permits, from 2013 until now, where there was previously deforestation, there is now zero deforestation ," he said.
Meanwhile, Medrilzam, Director of the Environment at the Ministry of National Development Planning/Bappenas, stated that the government already has a focus on environmental issues and climate change, as outlined in the 2020-2024 National Medium-Term Development Plan (RPJMN). He stated that the government has established national priorities related to climate change, the environment, and national resilience.
" For the first time in Indonesian history, the government is prioritizing these three issues: climate change, the environment, and national resilience ," he said. According to Medrizal, the government's commitment has been realized through low-carbon development.
On the other hand, funding is a crucial factor in implementing a number of climate change mitigation efforts. Djoko Hendratto, President Director of the Environmental Impact Management Agency (BPDLH) at the Ministry of Finance, stated that in measuring the effectiveness of funding for climate change control, BPDLH has several key points. For example, if the funds come from the state budget (APBN), targeting accuracy is paramount. However, if the funds come from donors, there must be agreements on the targets and measures for reducing emissions, which are approved by the relevant ministries/agencies.
