From January to August 2026, the estimated indicative burned area in Indonesia has reached 1.32 million hectares (AIT MADANI model). Behind this number, vulnerable groups persons with disabilities, women, the elderly, children, and Indigenous Peoples bear the heaviest burden, yet are rarely given a voice.
Forest and land fires are not merely an environmental issue; they are a crisis of justice. How do vulnerable groups experience and cope with these fires? To what extent does the current response system truly protect them? What needs to change to make future fire prevention and management more equitable and inclusive?
