Presidential Instruction No. 8/2018 concerning the Postponement and Evaluation of Permits and Increasing Palm Oil Plantation Productivity has been in effect for two years. However, this policy has achieved minimal results and has not yielded significant progress in improving palm oil plantation governance. Openness and transparency are among the main obstacles.
The enactment of Law No. 11 of 2020 concerning Job Creation has facilitated palm oil plantations' continued expansion into remaining natural forests. This threatens to undermine commitments to improving sustainable palm oil governance.
The Madani Berkelanjutan Foundation found in its study that the palm oil plantation industry does not contribute significantly to the economy, especially at the regional level. How can we raise public awareness of the contribution of palm oil to the regional economy?
