Madani Monthly Update On Indonesia Political Situation January 2020
The dynamics of political constellation is one of the things that should be reviewed by environmental social activists considering that politics is a tool for the configuration of the distribution of resources and public behavior. Therefore, Madani periodically makes updates and analysis related to the political dynamics of the environment and the management of Indonesia’s natural resources published every month.
In the Monthly Updates on Indonesia Political Situation January 2020 issue, there are several political events that should be a concern. The political events in question are as follows:
1. MA Ordered Jokowi To Repeal The Rules Of Protected Forests Could Be A Plantation. The Supreme Court (MA) granted a judicial review application submitted by Wahana Lingkungan Hidup Indonesia (Walhi) on Government Regulation (PP) Number 104 of 2015 on Procedures for Amendment of Forest Areas and Functions. The PP is suspected to be a tool of legitimacy to legalize the extinction of licensing and plantation activities in the forest area.
2 Form Of Government For The New Capital. Minister of National Development Planning (PPN) / Head of the National Development Planning Agency (Bappenas) Suharso Monoarfa said that later the new state capital area, namely Penajam Paser Utara Regency and Kutai Kartanegara East Kalimantan will turn into a special area. Related to how the form of the new capital government, the government along with the House of Representatives will decide it together. Related to the transfer of the new capital, it is suspected that it will provide benefits to national and local politicians and their families. In addition, the challenges of the new capital such as social conflicts and wildfires are also things that are worth paying attention to.
3. Omnibus Law and Environmental Protection. Omnibus Law received criticism from various parties. Particularly in the context of the environment, the Omnibus Law plan will include environmental licensing and is suspected to remove the IMB and Amdal. In addition, the Omnibus Law Task Force team formed does not involve various parties whose ideally Omnibus Law also gets approaches from various elements.
4. Arrest Editor of Mongabay.com. On Tuesday (21/1) editor of Mongabay.com Philip Jacobson was arrested in Palangkaraya on charges of violating Law No. 6 of 2011 on Immigration. The arrest was signaled because Mongabay conducted coverage of sensitive issues for the government and the company.
