Madani Monthly Updates On Indonesian Political Situation June 2020
The Madani Monthly Political Updates for June 2020 highlights several key political events, including the disbursement of REDD+ incentive funds amounting to Rp 840 billion or US$ 56 million from Norway to Indonesia after 10 years of cooperation. This funding is a result of Indonesia's success in reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation during the 2016-2017 period. Furthermore, the report notes the signing of Government Regulation (PP) No. 26 of 2020 on Forest Rehabilitation and Reclamation, which aims to gain optimal benefits from forests and land for community welfare.
Another crucial issue is the National Economic Recovery (PEN) Scheme initiated by the government to respond to the weakening economic impact of Covid-19 with a total budget of Rp 641.17 trillion. This program includes a subsidy for B30 Biofuel (BBN) of Rp 2.78 Trillion, which drew criticism from oil palm farmers who considered it an erroneous way to support Fresh Fruit Bunch (FFB) prices. On the other hand, the Government also proposed 89 new National Strategic Projects (PSN) for 2020-2024 valued at Rp 1,422 Trillion, including infrastructure projects that potentially weaken the protection of primary natural forests and peatlands as they are listed as exceptions to Presidential Instruction No. 5 of 2019.
