Safeguarding What Remains: A Review of the Decline in Natural Forest Cover, 2020–2021
This study highlights a decline of 128.7 thousand hectares of Indonesia’s natural forest cover in 2020–2021. Much of the loss occurred in licensed and concession areas, concentrated in several provinces in Kalimantan and Sumatra.
Most of the decline took place in production forests and other land-use areas linked to business permits. This indicates that land-based activities remain a major driver of natural forest loss.
The report stresses the need to protect 9.7 million hectares of remaining natural forests not yet under protection. Safeguarding these areas is crucial for achieving the FOLU Net Sink 2030 target and maintaining ecological functions.
