While palm oil certification systems primarily aim to improve governance and establish global commodity standards, their broader goal is to actively drive local economic growth and regional development. Theoretically, expanding sustainable palm oil plantations enhances local economies by boosting crop productivity, fostering eco-friendly investment ecosystems, and strengthening sustainable development governance. Furthermore, local development as defined by the Ministry of Home Affairs relies on leveraging regional resources to directly improve public welfare, increase income levels, create job opportunities, and boost human development metrics.

To address the gap in research regarding this economic impact, this infobrief examines how sustainable palm oil certification functions across Indonesia through both the Indonesian Sustainable Palm Oil (ISPO) and Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO) standards. It evaluates the tangible impacts of these certification systems on regional economies while providing strategic recommendations to refine certification frameworks. Ultimately, strengthening these systems ensures that sustainable palm oil practices deliver meaningful, long-term benefits to local communities and local economic progress.
