This publication examines the implications of the European Union Deforestation Regulation (EUDDR) on Indonesia's agricultural and forestry commodities, with a particular focus on palm oil and timber supply chains. The analysis highlights that while the regulation aims to prevent deforestation-linked products from entering the EU market, its implementation poses significant compliance challenges for smallholders and local producers. Small-scale farmers often lack the formal land tenure documents, mapping resources, and technical capacity required to satisfy strict EU traceability and geolocation standards, putting them at risk of market exclusion and economic displacement.

To address these challenges without undermining local livelihoods or climate progress, the brief advocates for proactive support mechanisms and inclusive governance from the Indonesian government and international partners. It emphasizes the need to accelerate land titling, expand social forestry programs, and establish smallholder-friendly traceability systems that align with EUDDR criteria. Furthermore, the document calls for constructive diplomatic engagement and bilateral cooperation between Indonesia and the EU to ensure that sustainability mandates are accompanied by financial assistance, capacity building, and equitable supply chain practices.
