The Dynamics of the Discourse on Biofuels in Indonesia in Its Ecological, Economic, and Social Contexts
Biofuel development in Indonesia is considered a key strategy for strengthening energy security and reducing dependence on fossil fuels. However, its implementation also presents significant ecological, economic, and social challenges, including deforestation, land-use change, biodiversity loss, and potential land conflicts affecting local and Indigenous communities. These issues highlight the need to balance renewable energy development with environmental protection and social well-being.
To ensure that biofuels contribute to sustainable development, policies must prioritize transparent governance, responsible natural resource management, and the protection of community rights. In addition to promoting innovation and diversifying bioenergy feedstocks, the government should ensure that biofuel expansion does not compromise food security, ecosystem conservation, or the livelihoods of communities that depend on natural resources. Through an inclusive and sustainable approach, biofuels can support Indonesia's energy transition while delivering long-term environmental, economic, and social benefits.
