Values and Principles of a Just Energy Transition
Indonesia’s energy transition must shift from an extractive and centralized energy system toward one that is regenerative and democratic, grounded in the values of justice, sovereignty, transparency, accountability, integrity, environmental protection, respect for Indigenous communities, strengthening community livelihoods, and addressing the climate crisis.
This document outlines five core values and principles that the Indonesian government must uphold in the energy transition process: Accountability, Transparency, and Participation; Respect for, Fulfillment, and Protection of Human Rights; Ecological Justice; Economic Justice; and Transformative Change.
The document calls for strategic actions, including: halting coal power plant expansion and accelerating early retirement while phasing out coal mining, abandoning false transition solutions (such as natural gas, coal co-firing, nuclear energy, and carbon capture and storage at coal-fired power plants), and implementing comprehensive reforms in energy policy and governance.
