[Jakarta, November 24, 2020] Some time ago, on August 21, 2020, the Green Climate Fund (GCF), also known as the Green Climate Fund, approved the Indonesian government's proposal to access results-based payment funds for reducing emissions from deforestation and degradation (REDD+) amounting to US$103.8 million, equivalent to 1.54 trillion rupiah.
This fund was provided as payment for Indonesia's success in reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation by 20.3 million tCO2e between 2014 and 2016. Indonesia's success in accessing this fund is an early indicator of global confidence in Indonesia.
Muhammad Teguh Surya, Executive Director of the Sustainable Madani Foundation, expressed his appreciation to the Indonesian government for its achievements in reducing deforestation, despite the ongoing debate surrounding the figure. Surya expressed his appreciation during a virtual talkshop discussion titled " The Green Climate Fund's Opportunity for Protecting Indonesia's Forests ," held by the Sustainable Madani Foundation on Tuesday, November 24, 2020.
" Our hopes for funding from the Green Climate Fund are certainly very high. We must utilize this large amount of funds as much as possible. We also hope that the public can access it, and ultimately, this large amount of funds can be effective ," said Teguh.
In this limited discussion, Dewa Ekayana, a Policy Analyst at the Fiscal Policy Agency of the Ministry of Finance, was the keynote speaker explaining the Green Climate Fund and various ways to access this funding.
Dewa Ekayana explained that the GCF is mandated by the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) to help developing countries achieve their climate commitments in their Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs). " The GCF itself is the largest available funding source to combat the impacts of global climate change ," Dewa Ekayana said.
The policy analyst also stated that all parties can access this funding by collaborating with accredited institutions. He also encouraged all actors and activists in environmental, forest, and nature protection to jointly submit proposals for a better Indonesia.
