A recent report from the Global Carbon Project's team of scientists shows that Indonesia is among the top ten carbon emitters worldwide. Indonesia's carbon emissions increased by 18.3% in 2022, the largest increase compared to other countries. This increase in emissions is driven by the use of fossil fuels (particularly coal), land conversion, and Indonesia's high rate of deforestation.
In the land use sector, Indonesia ranks second as the world's largest emitter. From 2013 to 2022, Indonesia's average land use emissions reached 930 million tons, contributing 19.9% of the world's total land use emissions. Together with Brazil and the Democratic Republic of Congo, Indonesia contributes 55% of global land sector emissions. Indonesia's peak emissions in 1997 were caused by peat fires.
