In general, biofuel is fuel from biomass or material derived from plants and animals, but more likely from plants.
Biofuel itself is divided into several types, namely bioethanol, biodiesel, and biogas. First, bioethanol. Bioethanol itself is an alcohol derived from plants, such as wheat, sugar cane, corn, cassava, sweet potatoes, fruit, and even vegetable waste. To obtain alcohol, these plants must first undergo a fermentation process.
Second , biodiesel. Biodiesel is a fuel made from soybean oil, rapeseed oil, castor oil, and sunflower oil. In Hawaii, biodiesel is made from used cooking oil. In Japan, biodiesel is made from used restaurant cooking oil.
Well, in Indonesia, most biofuels are made from crude palm oil. As a result, land expansion has occurred, leading to significant forest loss in Indonesia to meet the demand for biofuels. Poor Indonesia's forests.
Not only that, biodiesel can also be made from animal oil, but most countries in the world make it from plants.
Third , biogas. Biogas is a fuel derived from the fermentation of plant waste or waste (human or animal). When fermented, the waste or waste releases gas. This gas is called biogas.
Biogas is typically used to power electricity or stoves. By the way, biogas is much cleaner than coal. Plus, it produces more energy and produces less carbon dioxide. Cool, right?
How is biofuel produced?
Did you know that there are two main types of biofuel feedstocks: edible and non-edible. Human food products such as sugar, starch, or vegetable oil are converted into biofuel through the conventional method of transesterification (as mentioned above).
Biofuel can also be produced from non-food crops, agricultural waste, and non-consumable residues using advanced technologies such as hydrocracking. In this process, raw materials are broken down in the presence of hydrogen to produce biofuel.

According to the United States Department of Energy, biofuels like ethanol produce up to 48 percent less carbon dioxide than conventional gasoline, while using biodiesel releases only a quarter of the carbon dioxide of conventional diesel. This makes it a much more environmentally friendly option compared to fossil fuels.
