A Year of Moratorium, Towards Improvement of Palm Oil Governance
Indonesia is the largest oil palm producing country in the world. But a number of obstacles such as the lack of sustainable palm oil governance, cases of forest and land fires, to agrarian conflicts make oil palm plantations in Indonesia a source of problems.
The central government responded to this by issuing Presidential Instructions (Inpres) No. 8 of 2018 for palm moratorium, which is valid for 3 years. However, the implementation of this Inpres has not been smooth in a number of areas.
After a year, Madani Sustained, found that there were about one million hectares of oil palm plantations on primary forest land and peat restoration priority land. “The review of licensing of 1 million hectares of oil palm plantations in primary forest areas and peatlands is urgent because it is the key to achieving Indonesia’s climate commitment and as a form of government consistency in improving forest and land governance”. This was conveyed by the Executive Director of Madani Bersus Baru, Mohammad Teguh Surya. Together with Katadata.co.id and several other interested parties, Madani Continued to find a variety of facts in the field.
The findings can be reviewed from the report presented by Katadata as follows:
