Forest Cover Loss in Oil Palm Plantation Areas
For almost two decades, the remaining forest cover in Indonesia was 3.2 million hectares, down from 5.7 million hectares in 2001. This loss of forest cover automatically increased the area of oil palm plantations in forest areas to 2.5 million hectares in 2018.
In the past 17 years, the largest loss of forest cover in oil palm plantation areas occurred in 2012. At that time, the area lost reached 266,000 hectares, with Kalimantan being the largest contributor. This loss has tended to decrease over the past five years. In 2018, forest cover loss was 66.8,000 hectares.
According to the Corruption Eradication Commission's (KPK) Palm Oil Commodity Management System Study, several companies have reaped the benefits of forest clearing for oil palm plantations. However, the potential taxes incurred have never been calculated and are not paid to the state. This has detrimental consequences for Indonesia financially, environmentally, and socially in the future.
