Forests, Peat, Indigenous Peoples, and Climate Change in RPJMN 2020-2024
The National Medium-Term Development Plan (RPJMN) 2020-2024 is the last stage in achieving the vision of the Indonesian Long-Term Development Plan (RPJPN) 2005-2025. The RPJMN is published every 5 years mapping the problems that are being faced and formulating solutions through the priority national development agenda that will be implemented in the next 5 years.
RPJMN is not only a guideline for the government, but also all components of the nation, including society and business sectors, to realize national ideals and goals synergistically, coordinatively, and complement each other.1 Thus, RPJMN 2020-2024 which will be ratified by the end of 2019 or early 2020 is an important thing to review and be controlled in order to realize sustainable and equitable development for all Indonesian people.
In the second period of President Joko Widodo's administration, there are several urgent issues related to the environment and indigenous peoples that must be resolved immediately, including: repeated catastrophic forest and land fires that are massive, have not achieved social forestry targets and agrarian reform, the ineffective protection of natural forests and peatlands left, has not achieved peat restoration targets, and has not achieved the target of recognition and protection of indigenous peoples.
