Hotspots Invasion Review of the 2019 Forest and Land Fires
This report presents a review of the 2019 forest and land fires (FLF) and the 2020 Fire-Prone Area (FPA), finding that the majority (63.28 percent) of the burned area in 2019 was newly burned area that had not burned since 2015, with the fires mainly occurring in the forest zone (54.88 percent), especially in production forest encumbered by concessions, and 44 percent affecting the peat ecosystem, mostly protection peat. The provinces most affected by the largest burned area in 2019 were South Sumatera and Central Kalimantan, which are also peatland restoration priority provinces.
The five provinces with the largest FPA in 2020 are Central Kalimantan, West Kalimantan, Papua, East Kalimantan, and South Sumatera, requiring special attention and early preventive measures. The report concludes that the 2019 FLF correlates with the high expansion rate of planted palm oil area in the three provinces with the largest newly burned area, and underscores the importance of restoring and preserving the peat ecosystem, strict supervision of permit holders, and integrating forest rehabilitation efforts with fire prevention to minimize future FLF.
