NDC Progress Report: Assessing Emission Reduction Progress in the Forestry Sector
Indonesia aims to reduce GHG emissions by 29% independently and up to 41% with international support by 2030, with the forestry sector contributing the largest share at 17.2%. Emission reductions from the FOLU and peat sectors highlight their critical role in achieving the NDC targets.
However, progress faces challenges such as recurring forest fires, potential weakening of forest protection under the Job Creation Law, and the risk of increased emissions from National Economic Recovery programs that lack strong environmental safeguards.
Initiatives like accelerating Social Forestry and subnational programs (FCPF East Kalimantan and BioCarbon Fund Jambi) can help support NDC achievement. Key actions include expanding forest protection moratoriums, aligning development policies with low-carbon strategies, and strengthening peat restoration and forest degradation management.
