REDD+ Update Report Unravels Indonesia's Tangled Deforestation Count

This report compares deforestation data from the government (KLHK and Bappenas) and civil society (FWI and WRI) to highlight differences in definitions, methods, and calculation results. Inconsistencies, including between government agencies, raise doubts about the accuracy of the national deforestation figures released annually.

KLHK uses a 'net deforestation' approach (gross deforestation minus reforestation/afforestation) for national deforestation data, while the Forest Reference Emission Levels (FREL) document for REDD+ uses a 'gross deforestation' approach and only counts natural forest cover loss. To improve data accuracy, it is recommended that the government increase data transparency, present data on natural forest loss separately, disaggregate deforestation figures within and outside concessions, and encourage constructive dialogue with civil society."
