Safeguards implementation is an integral part of REDD+ implementation, as mandated by COP-16 in Cancun, Mexico. Every country carrying out REDD+ activities is obliged to respect and implement the Cancun Safeguards and develop a system for providing information on how these safeguards are upheld in REDD+ implementation. The scope of "REDD+ activities" is crucial for determining the extent of safeguards implementation.
