Spotlight on the Condition of Indonesia's Forests

This report presents key points from the State of Indonesia's Forests 2018 (SOFOR) publication by the Ministry of Environment and Forestry (KLHK), which discusses the latest data on forest cover, deforestation, social forestry, and efforts to reduce emissions from the forestry sector (REDD+). The report is broadly divided into four main sections: an overview of Indonesia's forests, government efforts to address deforestation and forest degradation, forests and community rights, and emissions reduction achievements.

The government claims significant success in controlling forest and land fires (karhutla), with the area burned dropping dramatically from 2.6 million hectares in 2015 to 0.165 million hectares in 2017. The moratorium policy is also considered significant because it protects approximately 66.4 million hectares of primary forest and peatland that have not yet been burdened with permits. In addition, the KLHK prioritizes agrarian reform and social forestry.
