Strengthening Indonesia's Readiness to Navigate the European Union Deforestation-Free Regulation through Improved Governance and Inclusive Partnership
National Strategic Projects (PSN) are granted legal privileges that allow them to bypass forest protection and spatial planning procedures, resulting in large-scale deforestation. Forest loss has occurred in multiple areas, including Obi Island and the Merauke Food Estate, even threatening protected forest zones.
Regulatory leniency under PSN has led to serious environmental damage, such as pollution and ecological degradation from nickel mining. Project implementation frequently violates environmental laws by disregarding public participation and the principle of Free, Prior, and Informed Consent (FPIC).
PSN pose a significant risk to Indonesia’s climate commitments by driving deforestation and increasing carbon emissions. Some projects are even exempted to build new coal-fired power plants, undermining the NDC and FOLU Net Sink 2030 targets.
