Strengthening the Forest Moratorium Presidential Instruction to Achieve the FOLU Net Sink Target | Madani (2022)

An estimated 1.39 million hectares of primary natural forest are not yet covered or protected by the Indicative Map for the Suspension of New Permit Issuance (PIPPIB). These areas are at risk of deforestation, threatening Indonesia’s climate commitments and the achievement of the FOLU Net Sink 2030 target.

Public participation in monitoring primary natural forest protection remains limited due to the lack of accessible data and information on PIPPIB. PIPPIB should be openly available and accessible at all times in accordance with Law No. 14 of 2008 on Public Information Disclosure.

The implementation of National Strategic Projects (PSN) is feared to undermine emission reduction commitments in the forest and land sector. For example, around 1.57 million hectares of natural forest cover and 642 thousand hectares of primary natural forest fall within the Area of Interest (AoI) of the Food Estate program.
