Updates on Deforestation and PIPPIB

The MADANI'S UPDATE May 2020 edition presents policy updates on forestry and climate change in Indonesia. Indonesia's net deforestation rate in 2018-2019 reached 462.4 thousand hectares, which is still above Indonesia's Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) threshold for that period (below 450 thousand hectares per year). The highest deforestation occurred in natural forests classified as "secondary forests". Cumulatively (2003-2018), the highest deforestation occurred in timber plantation permits and palm oil plantation permits/concessions.

Forest fires in 2019 burned 1.6 million hectares of land, 44% of which was in Peatland Ecosystems, and the largest fire incidents occurred in palm oil plantation concessions. The realization of social forestry as of May 2, 2020, reached 4,105,268.03 hectares. Regarding the 2020 NDC update, Indonesia did not increase its mitigation ambition target (remaining at 29%-41% from Business as Usual (BAU)), but it did increase clarity in mitigation and adaptation ambition, which drew criticism from civil society for being considered less ambitious and having a less inclusive drafting process
