Madani News Deputy Director of the Madani Berkelanjutan Foundation, Giorgio Budi Indarto, stated that to ensure biofuels (BNN) meet climate commitments, a biofuel roadmap is necessary to reduce carbon emissions. Giorgio, also known as Jojo, made this statement during the webinar " Food vs. Energy: Examining Biofuel Policy in Indonesia " on Tuesday, November 16, 2021, in collaboration with Mongabay Indonesia.
" Madani urges all parties discussing BBN to avoid using it as a tool to be labeled a false solution. Madani wants to emphasize that any solution, as long as it's properly thought out, can be a solution ," said Giorgio.
Indonesia is committed to reducing carbon emissions by 29 percent through its own efforts and up to 41 percent with international support. Therefore, according to Giorgio, Indonesia should not rely solely on biofuels made from crude palm oil (CPO).
" BBN isn't just biodiesel. If it's just biodiesel, the meaning of BBN becomes narrow, ultimately making it difficult to become a true climate change solution. And it's somewhat biased when only discussing one commodity ," he said.
In addition to the focus on CPO as the raw material for biofuels, Giorgio also views that the expansion of biofuel use domestically still faces the problem of high prices, making it unable to compete with fuel oil (BBM).
" We have to figure out how biofuels can compete with petroleum. Currently, without incentives, biofuels are more expensive, and people won't buy them, " said Giorgio.
