Madani News, the Sustainable Madani Foundation, has identified approximately 2.27 million hectares (ha) of land with potential for developing biofuel feedstocks other than palm oil. This includes 1.55 million ha of other land uses (APL), 438,260 ha of permanent production forest (HPT), and 278,000 ha of conversion production forest (HPK).
This was conveyed by the Geographic Information System (GIS) Specialist of the Madani Berkelanjutan Foundation, Fadli Ahmad Naufal, in a Workshop and Fellowship entitled "Not Just Palm Oil, Indonesia is Rich in Various Biofuels " organized by the Madani Berkelanjutan Foundation in collaboration with Mongabay on Wednesday, November 17, 2021.
Fadli also said that this figure was obtained after considering ecological aspects, existing permits, protection plans, and a focus on land cover that could be cultivated.
Fadli explained more fully that 371.92 thousand hectares of land are available in Jambi and 142.91 thousand hectares in South Sumatra. Furthermore, 286.69 thousand hectares are in East Kalimantan, around 267.56 thousand hectares in Central Kalimantan, and 104.68 thousand hectares in West Kalimantan. The remaining 123.81 thousand hectares are in East Nusa Tenggara and 281.77 thousand hectares in Papua.
" From these areas, we want to examine the existing commodities in the surrounding area. Of course, determining suitable commodities requires further research regarding land suitability, soil capacity, and so on ," said Fadli.
Based on his calculations, the largest existing potential land area is coconut plantations, at 969.28 thousand hectares. Then, there are cassava plantations at 913.13 thousand hectares, sweet potatoes at 912.47 thousand hectares, corn at 912.23 thousand hectares, areca nut at 574.71 thousand hectares, sugar palm at 538.82 thousand hectares, sugar cane at 172.88 thousand hectares, and castor oil palm at 100.75 thousand hectares.
